Between 1997 and 2001, he was the Minister of Economy and next he took the post of the deputy Prime Minister in Jerzy Buzek’s government. In 1993 he was the MP of the parliaments of 10th and 1st term, and from 1997 till 2001, the parliament’s 3rd term. Between 2004 and 2008, he was the leader of Partia Centrum.

In previous years he was involved in the underground opposition activities. During the roundtable meetings he was, on behalf of Solidarity movement, the expert in the area of mining and environmental protection.
